Le gamelan de 1887 à l'Exposition de 1889
The 1887 gamelan at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle

The gamelan said to be from Cirebon, given to France by the East Indies government in 1887, was most likely - and partly - exhibited at the 1889 Exposition Universelle outside of the "kampong", Javanese village located at the Invalides. It was shown in a large building of the Champ de Mars, called "palais des expositions diverses", housing the Dutch exhibition as well as those of other nations. The Netherlands, due to a political shift, had decided on an unofficial participation to the exhibition celebrating the French Revolution centenary. So the Dutch participants had to be content with a reduced set-up.
An administrative letter testifies to this loan : it emanated from the Ministère de l'Instruction Publique et des Beaux-Arts (nowadays the French Ministry of Education), dated from the 6th of April 1889, and is now kept in the Archives nationales in Paris. It authorizes Mr. Freiwald, the delegate of the Dutch committee to the Exposition Universelle, to borrow musical instruments from the Dutch East Indies given by the Netherlands to the musée du Conservatoire National de Musique. The conservatoire was usually very fastidious about lending instruments to exhibitions or outside events - though, most of the time, it concerned instruments from the Western classical tradition.

An article from the Livre d'Or de l'Exposition by Lucien Huard (1st volume, p.670-671) "LES PAYS-BAS ET LEURS COLONIES" by Henri ANRY describes this set-up :
"In the four corners of the lounge, light canopies, somewhat savage-looking are hung over weapons, clothes, idols and musical instruments from the Dutch Indies. Trophies of barbed knives, poisonous arrows from the Sunda Islands decorate the vividly coloured walls".
This description matches quite faithfully the engraving below, taken from a Dutch magazine of the time, and in which a saron or a slentho, a bonang, a gambang, gongs, kenong, kendhang and a rebab can be recognized.
